Gun drill is an effective tool for deep hole processing, and its processing range is very wide, from glass fiber, Teflon and other plastics to deep hole processing of high-strength alloys (such as P20 and Inconel). In deep hole processing with strict tolerance and surface roughness requirements, gun drill can ensure the dimensional accuracy, position accuracy and straightness of the hole.

In order to achieve satisfactory results when processing deep holes with gun drill, it is necessary to master the performance of gun drill system (including tools, machine tools, fixtures, accessories, workpieces, control units, coolant and operating procedures). The technical level of the operator is also important. According to the structure of the workpiece and the hardness of the workpiece material, as well as the working conditions and quality requirements of the deep-hole machining machine tool, select appropriate cutting speed, feed rate, tool geometric parameters, carbide grade and coolant parameters to obtain excellent machining performance.

In production, straight slot gun drill is used most. According to the diameter of the gun drill and the condition of passing through the internal cooling hole of the transmission part, the handle and the cutter head, the gun drill can be made into two types: integral type and welded type. Its coolant is sprayed from the small hole on the rear knife face. The gun drill can have one or two round cooling holes, or a single waist-shaped hole

The standard gun drill can process holes with diameters ranging from 1.5mm to 76.2mm, and the drilling depth can reach 100 times the diameter. The specially customized gun drill can process deep holes with an aperture of 152.4mm and a depth of 5080mm. Although the feed rate per revolution of gun drill is low, its feed rate per minute is larger than that of fried dough twist drill (the feed rate per minute is equal to the feed rate per revolution times the tool or workpiece speed).

Because the cutter head is made of cemented carbide, the cutting speed of gun drill is much higher than that of high-speed steel drill. This increases the feed rate of the gun drill per minute. In addition, when high-pressure coolant is used, its chips can be effectively discharged from the hole to be processed, and it is not necessary to regularly withdraw the tool during drilling to discharge the chips.
